What Affects Sod Installation Cost
Every yard is different. A simple, flat lawn with good soil costs less than a sloped yard full of roots and rocks. Here are the main factors that determine your price:
Yard Size
Sod is priced per square foot. Larger yards get better per-square-foot pricing because setup and travel costs spread across more area. Measure your lawn or we'll measure during the estimate.
Grass Type
St. Augustine (Floratam) is typically the most affordable. Palmetto St. Augustine costs slightly more. Zoysia and specialty grasses cost more per pallet. The price difference adds up on large lawns.
Soil Preparation Needed
Clean, level soil with good drainage? Minimal prep. Rocky soil, tree roots, or poor grading? More labor before sod goes down. This is often the biggest variable in pricing.
Old Lawn Removal
Installing over bare dirt is cheaper than removing existing grass. If we need to kill and remove old sod, that adds to the project cost.
Access and Location
Backyard with no gate access? Sod has to be carried by hand. Steep slopes? More labor to install. Long distance from our suppliers? Delivery costs more.

Buying sod yourself and laying it saves money upfront. But improper soil prep causes most sod failures. If you're not comfortable with grading, tilling, and working fast (sod dies within hours of cutting), professional installation pays for itself in avoided replacement costs.
Getting an Accurate Estimate
Online calculators give rough numbers, but they can't see your yard. Slopes, drainage issues, root systems, and access problems all affect real-world pricing. An on-site estimate gives you an accurate number.
When getting quotes, make sure you're comparing the same scope of work. Does the price include soil prep? Old lawn removal? Some quotes look cheap until you realize half the work is extra.
